Geosyntec’s Canadian Operations has an exciting opportunity for an Intern/Co-op Water, Wastewater Process Engineer in our Waterloo, ON office, you will have the opportunity to apply your engineering academic knowledge to real-world situations while also learning the business skills needed for a successful consulting career. The Engineering group provides engineering services for the firm's clients world-wide specializing in services that emphasize the application of innovative and leading-edge industrial and mining water and wastewater treatment, groundwater remediation and soil remediation applications.

 

We are seeking an engineering co-op / intern for approximately 4 months (8 months optional) during the summer semester of 2025. The co-op placement will be located at the Waterloo office location at 295 Hagey Blvd. Candidates are responsible for coordinating their own transportation to and from the office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design industrial water, wastewater, mine impacted water treatment, and related process engineering systems, including sampling and characterization, bench and pilot scale treatability evaluations, PFD and P&ID development, production of detailed engineering drawings and equipment specifications and on-site activities;
  • Economic and technical evaluation of treatment technologies;
  • Literature reviews for state-of-the-art water treatment processes and techniques;
  • Process engineering system evaluation and modelling, resource reduction audits, and operational troubleshooting.
  • Assist with engineering calculations using computer-based technical tools;
  • Technical writing of reports, letters, memoranda, plans, specifications, and proposals;
  • Data input and analysis, including preparing maps, tables, and figures;
  • Follow instructions and interact with engineers, geologists, office administrative staff, CADD operators (draftsmen), contractors and construction personnel;
  • Potential for fieldwork such as soil and groundwater sampling, stormwater inspections, and drilling and contractor oversight; and
  • Local travel or driving to project sites as needed.

Education and Licensure

  • Currently registered in a Bachelor’s or Master’s university degree program in a relevant engineering discipline. (required)
  • close to graduation (e.g. senior) or Master’s enrollment. (preferred)
  • Degree focus area in chemical, civil, or environmental engineering. (preferred). 

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience with ArcView, CADD, and/or Microsoft Office. (preferred)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; (preferred)
  • The ability to conduct independent research; (preferred)
  • A team player with a willingness to travel within southern Ontario and Canada, as required; (preferred)
  • Familiar with industrial processes in relation to impacted water generated in food and beverage, mining, and chemical manufacturing sectors; and (preferred)
  • Valid Canadian driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and reliable transportation to drive to project sites. (required)

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with industrial wastewater systems and technology, process and detailed design, and operational troubleshooting;
  • Experience with one or more industrial sectors including: food processing, automotive, chemical, mining, pharmaceutical, metal finishing, petroleum, and general manufacturing;
  • Knowledge of microbiological fundamentals and processes as it pertains to biological water treatment;
  • Knowledge of water, wastewater and other environmental engineering technologies, process calculations, and system design;
  • Knowledge of industrial wastewater quality and municipal wastewater quality and impact on selected treatment technologies; and
  • An interest in water/wastewater treatment, data management, hydrogeology, geochemistry, groundwater remediation.
