Overview

SiREM, an operating division of Geosyntec Consultants is seeking an Environmental Laboratory Technician to join our team in Guelph, Ontario for a one (1) year contract. The position will perform laboratory testing procedures related to bench-scale treatability testing; provide neat, accurate, and comprehensive documentation of all laboratory related activities being performed, and compile and review data for reports, while working cooperatively with other members of the laboratory team.

SiREM is a state-of-the-art groundwater remediation and environmental biotechnology laboratory in the U.S. and Canada. SiREM provides a suite of unique, science-based products and services, primarily related to the remediation of chlorinated solvents and other recalcitrant chemicals. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs general laboratory duties and housekeeping: provide support for laboratory testing, including: pipetting, measuring, sampling, data entry, etc.;
  • Performs laboratory tests including: probe analyses (pH, ORP, conductivity, dissolved oxygen) and colorimetric and photometric analyses;
  • Prepare and sample bench-scale reactors with contaminated groundwater and soils
  • Records test results on standardized forms and write test reports describing procedures used;
  • Prepares graphs and charts;
  • Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment;
  • Calibrates laboratory instruments;
  • Prepares chemical solutions according to standard procedures and protocols;
  • Provides neat, accurate, and comprehensive documentation of all laboratory-related activities, as required;
  • Provides assistance in the preparation of final reports, work plans, health and safety documents, and the assembly of report appendices, as needed;
  • Observes and abides by the policies and procedures outlined in the company’s Environmental, Health, and Safety Management policies and procedures and comply with GLPS and/or ISO 17025 documentation requirements; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Training: This position requires WHMIS training and laboratory specific health and safety training, and may require first aid, CPR, or transport of dangerous goods (TDG) training, paid for by the firm. We also offer professional and technical development opportunities including in-house seminars, webinars, and mentoring, that allow our staff to build the technical and business skills necessary to become successful laboratory employees.
  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of the job, the individual will work in the laboratory; the individual will be trained to work with fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals under safe controlled conditions wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (e.g., laboratory coats, safety glasses, gloves) and engineering controls (e.g., fume hoods, biosafety cabinet).  The individual is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the environment is moderate. SiREM’s Guelph facility is designated as a Biosafety Level II Laboratory. Although this position does not involve direct work with biosafety level II microorganisms, the individual will work in a facility that may contain those microorganisms and may on occasion assist in tasks that do involve potentially pathogenic microorganisms. The individual will be trained to work in a biosafety level II laboratory.
  • Some fieldwork and overnight travel may be required from time to time.

Education and Licensure

  • College diploma in biotechnology or related field. (required)

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Ability to monitor several different types of studies and laboratory activities simultaneously. (preferred)
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations (preferred)
  • Experience with data input and analysis, including preparing tables and figures (proficiency with MS Office applications, including Excel. (preferred)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, be self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic. (required)
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unaided and 50-100 pounds with assistance and/or proper engineering controls. (required)
  • Ability to regularly use hands to grip, grasp, finger, handle, or feel; and to sit, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. (required)

Below is the range that we in good faith believe is the potential compensation for this role at the time of this posting and is only applicable for jobs to be performed in the specified location(s) below. The typical base salary range for this position is just one component of Geosyntec’s total compensation package for employees. Actual compensation will be determined based on education, experience, skill set and location.

  • Minimum: $23.34 / hourly / Maximum: $32.68 / hourly (Guelph, ON)
